Parthenocissus inserta

Identity

P. inserta is a member of the Parthenocissus quinquefolia group and has often been confused with P. quinquefolia s. str. Almost all older Central European records refer to this widely spread and fully established species, while the naturalisation of P. quinquefolia s. str. still is in its beginnings.

For the distinction of these species see Parthenocissus quinquefolia.

Recent Information on the situation in east Austria

Parthenocissus inserta in East Austria is fully naturalised and the third most common tall-growing liana following Clematis vitalba and herbaceous Humulus lupulus. It is strongly concentrated in the warm lowlands. I recently have found a specimen in a spruce forest near Rainbach (Mühlviertel, Austria) at a sea level of about 650 m, though, showing that it can reach a least such altitudes today.
